Charting violent deaths through A Series of Unfortunate Events

  • Book One: Beatrice and Bertrand Baudelaire die/are murdered in a house fire/arson (off-screen)
  • Book Two: Monty Montgomery is murdered by poison (off-screen, though the body is seen)
  • Book Three: Josephine Antwhistle is murdered by leeches (off-screen)
  • Book Four: Dr. Orwell dies accidentally by stepping in front of a giant lumber saw (on-screen-ish; witnessed by the children)
  • Book Five: no deaths take place during the book’s timeline
  • Book Six: no deaths take place during the book’s timeline
  • Book Seven: Jacques Snicket is murdered by Count Olaf (off-screen, though the body is seen)
  • Book Eight: the extremely large assistant who looks like neither a man nor a woman dies in the hospital fire (off-screen)
  • Book Nine: Madame Lulu/Olivia and the bald man assisting Count Olaf are eaten by lions; murder or accident unknown (on-screen-ish; children refuse to watch)
  • Book Ten: no deaths take place during the book’s timeline
  • Book Eleven: no deaths take place during the book’s timeline
  • Book Twelve: Dewey Denouement dies of a harpoon fired accidentally by the Baudelaires; the Baudelaires deliberately set a hotel on fire, number of victims unknown
  • Book Thirteen: Kit Snicket is poisoned by the medusoid mycelium shortly after giving birth; Count Olaf dies of a harpoon fired by Ishmael

I find it interesting that after the particularly grisly deaths, the next two books give us a break from death.
